At miart 2019 Otto Zoo presents an installation by Serena Vestrucci (Milan, 1986)Strappo alla regola (European flags canvas, cotton thread, three months). This work was produced and presented by Otto Zoo in 2013 and has never been shown since then, until now.
In Venice during the summer of 2013, Serena Vestrucci cut approximately 300 European flags (EU flags) into pieces. The work of art takes on its form through the attempt to transform one thing into another, by means of slight changes. A potentially infinite process, a pattern that moves through simple displacement. The simple act of cutting a flag, deconstructing it, gives one the sensation of standing under a starry night sky. A potentially infinite process, a pattern that moves through simple displacement.
Six years later, this same work invites a series of other reflections: it is more relevant today than ever; and not through the artist’s choice but through her awareness, through references and socio-political symbols, that are different from the original concept. We believe it is important to show this work at an Italian fair during such a delicate moment in European history, but always with a focus on its initial concept; after all, Kant found the consciousness of his existence under the “starry sky”.
